I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever…Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever. John 6:51-58
I remember a poster in my elementary school cafeteria that proclaimed “You are what you eat.”
I’ve never been particularly good at memorizing scripture. I do see the value of it, but studying the Word has been much more meaningful to me. Examining a verse in context helps develop right understanding and appreciation of the richness of God’s word. Memorizing a verse out of context can be valuable, but it can also lose power or be misapplied more easily.
When I study a passage, I get to know it, it becomes mine; I digest a passage so that it becomes part of me. The words speak to me throughout the day, leading my thoughts and attitudes which ultimately influence my action. I’m thankful for the pieces of this bread that build me up.
You are what you eat. Be filled with God’s Word!
