God Waits

Have you ever had to wait on God? I’ve had some experience and opportunity to learn patience waiting on God over the years. But it never really occurred to me until today how God waits for us.

God is merciful, loving and compassionate, generous, and sovereign. His power is awesome, and yet…He doesn’t reach in to control everything. God lets us choose to go our own way and do horrible things, and He waits. Today, bombs are falling all around our sponsored children in Sudan, and abused and abandoned children struggle right in my own town. How His heart must break as He waits for us to pursue justice and protect the orphan and all the other things He calls us to do to take care of this world He has made.

When I hear of terrible things happening in the world, I want to do something. Is God waiting for me? Yesterday, a friend shared with me her experience bringing God’s love to a little piece of the broken world, and I marvel at how God moves when we cooperate with Him. He waits, yes, and He acts. I don’t want to miss out on being a part of His action.

What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction?  What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory.  Romans 9:22-23

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.  I Peter 3:9
