Glory Thief

I will not give my glory unto another. Isaiah 48:11

In rebuking the Israelites for their spiritual pride and idolatry, God declares, “I will not give my glory unto another.” (Isaiah 48:11b, KJV)

I love when I get to see God at work and even occasionally get to be a part of what He’s doing. Sometime I receive that as a gift. Sadly, I often have a tendency to make it about me instead. For example, recently a friend shared some personal struggles with me and was encouraged by what I said in response. Reflecting on the conversation later, it was so easy to think there was something about me that made her comfortable sharing with me, as well as to be proud of the insights I could share with her. God reminded me that when I think like that, I am trying to take His glory for my own. Instead, I want to refocus on gratitude and humility.

I’m so sorry I keep trying to steal your glory, Lord. I do, and I am.

Only you are worthy of glory, Lord. Please help me live, think, and breathe in that truth. I feel more open to you in that reality. Trying to take your glory for myself closes me off from you. Thank you for your immense patience with me as I almost constantly try to steal what is yours.
