Tip of the Iceberg

Have you heard the expression, “that’s just the tip of the iceberg”? Growing up in Alaska, I’ve seen firsthand how only 10% of a floating iceberg is visible above the water; 90% is hidden below the surface. The other day, I met with a woman who reminded me of this. I knew just a little about her, that she’s a pleasant person devoted to her family and involved in her church and various ministries. She’s not one of those people who everyone recognizes as being “up front;” rather, she’s one of those who spends more time listening to people and being interested in them than in talking about herself.

In the context of this recent conversation, I learned a lot more about her. She was not at all boastful, nor was she trying to make sure I knew all the great things she does, she was just sharing her heart for people and that included ways she’s been involved with them. I was amazed and humbled by the deep, powerful, and quiet ways she shares God’s love in tangible ways with others, especially those that are often rejected or ignored. For example, she started and sustains a ministry teaching troubled teens marketable skills while affirming their value in God’s eyes. Not only were her stories inspiring, I was also touched to get a glimpse of how much of this woman was “below the surface.” It helped me recognize the unseen value in other people as well, realizing that we all have the “tip of the iceberg” visible to others and that it’s a joy to learn more about the depth in others’ lives.

Things about us that are important and meaningful don’t need to be displayed on the surface for everyone to see at first glance. I don’t want to prop up my own iceberg so that more of it is plain to see. Nor do I want to assume that what I know about someone is all there is. Instead, I will look for these submerged treasures that can be discovered as we get to know each other.

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them… Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:1-4
