Wash My Feet!

Have you ever been in a church setting where members washed one another’s feet, to follow Jesus’ example? I’ve been in that situation a few times, and honestly, it was somewhat to extremely awkward for everybody involved.

However, I recently had the opportunity to wash feet at City Team’s Thanksgiving party. In addition to eating a wonderful meal and getting a free hair cut, the attendees could get a new pair of socks and pick out a pair of donated shoes. Before they went shoe “shopping,” they were to get their feet washed. The volunteers were taught to not only clean the feet, but also give a foot massage in the process. I have to tell you, the people who sat down in front of me were so happy to soak their feet in the warm water and have a gentle touch work on their aching muscles. I was prepared for self-consciousness, but there was none. The majority of the people expressed appreciation for the care, and honestly seemed to be relaxed, comfortable, and enjoying themselves.

Thinking about it later, I considered the contrast between my “middle class,” self-sufficient, my-feet-better-be-clean-before-anyone-sees-them attitude and theirs. What a tangible example of the poor in spirit who are ready to graciously and gratefully receive!

How often am I like Peter, “No, Lord; you shall never wash my feet!*”? I want to be more like those City Team guests, willing to accept what Jesus offers, without self-consciousness or pride.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. Psalm 51:17

*John 13:8
