I have known “busy.” I have used “busy” as an answer to the question, “how are you?” – an answer that indicates not only that I have a lot going on, but also attempts to claim that I am therefore important, and even brushes off those who ask the question, suggesting that I do not have time in my important life for them. However, the last time I answered “busy,” (see Are you ready for Christmas?) it was really more of a cry for help – “I don’t want to have so many urgent responsibilities that can’t be put off!”
While my kids were growing up, I was careful to guard my family time. Last fall when both my kids were away at college, I dove into life opportunities that I had been putting off, such as finally taking a Spanish class I continued to volunteer my time in ministry, seeking relationships with teen moms and serving in my church. There was still a lot going on, but I was a little more deliberate about how I spent my time, less reactive and more responsive. When asked, “How’s life?” I could now answer, “Full.” This is how I want to describe my life. And while some of it depends on circumstances, it also depends on me surrendering my time to God, something God continues to teach me.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10
