In – Dig – Nation

Indignation.  I see it all around me.  And often in me.  And funny, when I parse it out – In-dig-nation – I think, “We truly are a nation that digs in.”  I don’t necessarily mean the United States, but our own “this is who we are” kind of nation.  We dig into our opinions, our positions, our defensive trenches.  And from there, everyone outside looks like an enemy, so we launch offensive hostilities of self-righteous indignation.

What if there’s a different way?

Jesus seemed to live one.  When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly (1 Peter 2:23).  What if we, too, entrust ourselves to him who judges justly, trusting God to be our defense?  And trust that, if God in the flesh was willing to humble himself for us, he doesn’t need our blustering indignation.
