Opening the Letter Video Series

This is a study of the Bible as God’s Love Letter. Each week, the video gives a short overview of one section or theme of the Bible. The Study Questions provide an opportunity to dig deeper into a small section of scripture with reflection questions for individual or group study. In this lesson, we see the beginning of God’s chosen people. God chooses Abram, giving His promise and purpose for Abram. This promise and purpose extends to the church as well.

This lesson summarizes the overarching narrative of the Old Testament, the history of God’s Chosen People, highlighting the repeated cycle of their faithfulness, disobedience, suffering, repentance, and deliverance. Instead, Jesus invites us to share his attitude of submission and dependence on his father, calling us to remain in him like a branch attached to a vine. Jesus warned his disciples that following him would include suffering. Sometimes suffering is a result of our sin, sometimes of our obedience, and other times, simply of living in a broken world. The apostles share their confidence that God offers hope and comfort even in our suffering.

The Bible ends with the book of Revelation, promising that the oppressed will be rescued, all brokenness will be made whole, and the perfect Kingdom of God that Jesus ushered in will be fulfilled, but that’s not the end of God’s love letter. Not only is the Bible God’s written love letter and Jesus the incarnate love letter, you, too, are a letter. You, too, are meant to carry God’s message of love to the world.
