Have you ever been mad at God?

A friend of mine is going through a significantly painful life situation that begs the question, “Is it OK to be mad at God?”

I’ve heard a theologically convincing “No, because then you’re claiming you can judge God.” However, where does that leave you when you’re struggling? Not only are you angry, you can’t admit you’re angry, and on top of that, you have the further burden of shame and guilt for doing something as audacious as considering yourself above God. You try to force your mind to say that you’re not angry, but it doesn’t convince your heart. You know “God is enough” and “He works all things for good;” you say the words others expect to hear and force yourself to smile, but your lips are thin and tight, and your words don’t express your heart. What do to but withdraw, harden, grow cold?

Instead, what if God can handle it? What if you throw yourself in God’s lap like a two year old? Scream with rage; arch your back in defiance; beat your fists upon His chest. Sob your heart out on His shoulder until you can’t cry any more. And then, and then, you can find peace and rest and comfort in His arms.

Yes, God does promise and offer peace, but He doesn’t want us to take pious shortcuts. Jesus shares and bears our pain when we bring it to him, and he can handle our honest anger and questions.
